Some books I read & liked
Life & Thoughts
Jenseits von Gut und Böse German book, I don’t think there is a English translation, what a bummer. Salomon - the Author - explains in a very simple understandable german (unlike Nietzsche) why good & bad don’t exist, why free will is an illusion and concludes how leaving good & bad and the illusion of the existence of the free will leads to more “relaxed” society.
The chips are down Written by Satre. Due to low production in English finding the book in English is difficult and very expensive (100-200 bucks). If you can read French or German you can get it for less than $10. A short screen play that covers determinism. Short but similar to “Jenseits von Gut und Böse” if you understand why free will does not exist you will view life a bit more relaxed. I enjoyed “The chips are down” a lot and think about it once in a while.
The Selfish Gene In our fast pace world, dominated by headline news on Twitter, TikTok and Instagram the “meme gene” that seeks replicate is living its best life. Reading it will may make you view this world with different eyes and possibly a bit feared for the future.
General
The Perfume I think this is most well written book in German I have ever read. I have yet to read the english translation. The story is about the french boy Jean Baptiste Grenouille who has been gifted with an absolute sense of smell and with that gift he seeks to create the perfect perfume.
The Swarm Probably my fav science fiction book. I will just copy & past the good reads description: Whales begin sinking ships. Toxic, eyeless crabs poison Long Island’s water supply. The North Sea shelf collapses, killing thousands in Europe. Around the world, countries are beginning to feel the effects of the ocean’s revenge as the seas and their inhabi-tants begin a violent revolution against mankind. In this riveting novel, full of twists, turns, and cliffhangers, a team of scientists discovers a strange, intelligent life force called the Yrr that takes form in marine animals, using them to wreak havoc on humanity for our ecological abuses. Soon a struggle between good and evil is in full swing, with both human and suboceanic forces battling for control of the waters. At stake is the survival of the Earth’s fragile ecology – and ultimately, the survival of the human race itself.
A trillion dollar The german word “Billion” means “Trillion” in English. For over 500 years a family has been protecting a fortune that accumulates interests and interestes. Until one day an average Joe inherits a trillion Dollar and becomes the richest person in the world. I think the book could have done a bit more with the story but just for the idea I liked it and put it on this list. Andrea Eschbach has some really good books.
